Muslims throughout the world have been celebrating all week, with the main activities being held Thursday night and Friday. But what is the Mawlid al-Nabawi and why do Muslims celebrate it?The Mawlid al-Nabawi is the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In a “hadith” (saying of Prophet Muhammad) narrated by his companion Anas ibn Malik, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “None of you will have faith until he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind.” [Bukhari]. In a time when extremists are acting in a hateful manner opposing the virtue and teachings of the Prophet, the Mawlid al-Nabawi is needed more than ever to instill love for God’s final messenger and to spread the excellent character and virtue that he was sent by God to teach.
