Fortunately there were enough of us girls who didn’t believe a word of it and went blindly into the work force coming up with something resembling a career. This was mostly without getting any direction from our teachers about what we might be good at. Fortunately things have changed – quite dramatically as it happens – girls are frequently and continually getting better marks at school than their male counterparts. This imbalance of marks has vexed educationalists worldwide for years, with many continually coming up with excuses for why boys fall short of girls in school grades. And now that there is more in-class assessment and less dependency on exams for results, there are claims teachers are favouring girls when assessing them.
