SINCE 1998 and the end of the Asian financial crisis, the unemployment rate in Malaysia has not risen above 3.7% and the average for the last 18 years has been 3.3%. While our rate of youth unemployment is nowhere near Spanish levels, we ought to be concerned about why young people are the largest and growing portion of those who are unemployed. Graduate unemployment, therefore, receives the most attention but the question of youth unemployment goes further, as most young people do not have a tertiary education. Unfortunately, we do not have enough data to understand what the root causes of rising youth unemployment are. So, why are so many young people unemployed and what can be done about it?
