Why an ADHD drug is outpacing Ozempic as the fastest-growing script in Australia - as experts sound the alarm over troubling 'system failure'

Vyvanse has overtaken Ozempic as Australia's fastest‑growing prescription medication, with almost 2.2million subsidised scripts for the ADHD stimulant issued in the past year. The taxpayer‑funded prescriptions for the central nervous system stimulant containing lisdexamfetamine dimesylate have surged since 2021, when prescribing rules were expanded to allow adults newly diagnosed with ADHD to access the drug. Figures released by the Federal Health Department show Vyvanse scripts increased by about 653,000 last year alone, costing the Commonwealth $167million. He said their effect appeared to be generic, meaning everyone would feel more focused if they took a stimulant drug. The most commonly dispensed medications were the antibiotics amoxicillin and cefalexin which were dispensed to nearly 3.5million patients apiece.
