When I turned 18 I don’t think I had ever voluntarily listened to a pop song. At university new friends took me in hand and downloaded almost the entire history of popular music on to my iPod. The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, the Smiths and Arctic Monkeys all happened for me in the space of a year. It was like being handed hundreds of new worlds at once. And, as we most despise the sins we are guilty of ourselves, I decided that having a closed mind was unforgiveable.
