We are seeing the future of retail stores — and they have a loading dock in the front, not out back. The former Sam’s Club in question is in the greater Chicagoland area and is one of 60 warehouse club sites parent company Walmart closed earlier this year. As such it will be the second former Sam’s Club to be reinvented as a distribution center for online sales. Will all of these malls and strip centers, decimated by the changing face of retailing, be reborn as distribution centers to service online? Maybe not all of them, but certainly the metamorphosis of shopping centers to shipping centers is well on its way.
