Authentic Brands is big; it says the retail sales volume of the brands it owns is over $9 billion. What’s different about the acquisition of Sports Illustrated is that it comes at it from the other direction. The original model of the licensing business that Authentic Brands began in is particularly challenged by these changes. The Authentic Brands acquisition of Sports Illustrated is important because it tells us the future is not just about having a product and adding relevant content.
