U.S. vehicle buyers are buying more light trucks, SUVs and crossovers than passenger cars. The profit on trucks and SUVs is where the companies make their money, while they generally lose money selling passengers cars. Subcompact SUVs have taken off in popularity in the last few years, and one of the new entrants unveiled at the L.A. Auto Show is the nicely styled Hyundai Kona, smaller than the brand’s current smallest crossover, the Tucson.
