Mark Schafer/HBOHBO's Girls will end its six-season-run on Sunday, and it's unlikely more than 1 million will watch the finale live or that same night. For some comparison, the least-watched Game of Thrones episode last season garnered over 5 million live (or same-day) viewers. “When we ordered Girls, we were thinking more about the original voice than the demographic it would attract,” says Casey Bloys, now HBO’s programming chief, but, at the time Girls was acquired, HBO’s head of comedy. Big Little Lies, which averaged more than double the live-plus-same-day viewers as Girls, only generated 270,651 instances of social engagement. While Broad City was a web series before Girls premiered, the latter undoubtedly made way for the former to have a place on cable television.
