Why Not Theatre, in partnership with the Shaw Festival, will adapt the Indian epic the Mahabharata in an international collaboration between artists in Canada, the U.S. and the United Kingdom. “It’s an incredible labyrinth: a gripping story steeped in deep philosophical and religious ideas,” said Why Not artistic director Ravi Jain, who will direct with American Jenny Koons. In 2015, as part of the Panamania festival, Why Not presented a multimedia work, Gimme Shelter, based on a small part of the Mahabharata called the Bhagavad Gita. The new production will premiere in 2019, featuring a cast drawn entirely from the South Asian diaspora. It’s being funded by the Canada Council for the Arts’ New Chapter program and U.K. theatre company Complicité.
