In what amounts to a shot heard 'round the world, Netflix has apparently snagged the worldwide theatrical and streaming rights for Martin Scorsese's The Irishman. The measure of success for the major studios is an abundance of would-be tentpole franchise offerings based on known IP. Right now, Netflix and Amazon are chasing star power and would-be prestige. It is one born not just from studios emphasizing franchise-friendly, IP-based tentpole films but also from moviegoers making the same theatrical choice. When we send a message to Hollywood that we will only venture into theaters for the biggest-of-big tentpole releases, then we shouldn't be too shocked when Martin Scorsese's new movie becomes a Netflix original.
