To this day, I think it might’ve been the best Oscars, but I’m not sure that has anything to do with the winners or hijinks throughout the night. My father worked constantly, and as a child, there were few things I craved more than his time and attention. Having spent half his life as far from Hollywood as possible, the movies — and, therefore, the Oscars — were aspirational. I watched everything he did (no matter the rating and whether I could understand it) and eagerly awaited our weekly family trips to Blockbuster. His love of movies and the dream that they represented was instilled in me.
