FIFA is considering expanding the Club World Cup to 24 teams, according to the Associated Press. This has led to speculation that the Confederations’ Cup may be scrapped to make room in the soccer calendar for the enlarged Club World Cup. Something needs to be done to boost interest in the Club World Cup, which has struggled for attendances as well as TV ratings. FIFA have already expanded the World Cup, which will feature 48 national teams in 2026, so it isn’t surprising that they are considering expanding the Club World Cup. Maybe one day this will lead to a real ‘Club World Cup’ where teams from other continents have a realistic shot at the trophy.
