So, Bill Maher referred to himself as a “house n***er” on his Friday show. The attempted “joke” is too, well, racist, to be either buried by apologies, however sincere or self-serving, or lost in a growing nuance-free cacophony calling for his termination. That would require guilt-free conscious racist attitudes to a degree not yet widely present even in Trump’s America. So, let’s give Maher, Sasse and the audience the benefit of the doubt. Instead Maher really does seem to be poking fun at himself, maybe even trying to indict the excesses of racism and white supremacy.
