Wholesale prices flare up in August

The wholesale inflation in July stood at 3.55 per cent. The rise in WPI inflation is in contrast to retail inflation, which eased to a five-month low of 5.05 per cent in August. "The pick-up in wholesale inflation was broadly in line with our expectations, with an adverse base effect outweighing the cooling effect of lower food inflation," Icra senior economist Aditi Nayar said. The WPI inflation for June has also been revised upwards at 2.12 per cent against a provisional estimate of 1.62 per cent. "Wholesale inflation has undergone a sizable upward revision of 40-50 basis points for the last four months, which is a source of some concern," Nayar said.
