Lashing out at the “Zionist entity” is the single, indeed the only, unifying cause that unites the otherwise bickering Arab and Muslim countries. The latest vote condemning American recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital must be seen in this light, and as yet another farcical voting ceremony at the UN. The Arabs, who hailed a “victory for Palestine”, prefer not to delve too deep in the surprisingly high number of countries that either opposed the anti-US vote or abstained. The US has been brandished a non-trustworthy party in peace negotiations and the Palestinians now refuse to talk to Trump’s emissaries. The dynamics of such a move are unpredictable, but it seems reasonable to expect other countries to follow suit.
