Treasury Board President Mona Fortier speaks during a news conference on the first day of a federal public service strike on April 19. As the pandemic evolved — and contracts with now-striking PSAC groups expired — the approach to where people should work swung to the other end of the pendulum. PSAC said its members are just as effective working remotely as they are in the office, and protecting remote work in a new deal is a main reason why it's striking. He mentioned the 2022 federal budget saying remote work could save billions of dollars a year if it meant the government could sell off some buildings. I think this management right needs to be sustained as a management right and I truly believe remote work or telework is something that will continue to transform," she said.
