Let’s get after it: Even as CNN puts much of its energy into launching a new streaming-video hub, it’s also trying to figure out how to replace Chris Cuomo in its pivotal 9 p.m. time slot. CNN has seen its viewership at 9 p.m. erode noticeably since Cuomo departed. Among the anchors who have filled the slot in recent weeks, Coates may have the closest link to CNN’s current primetime schedule. CNN is relying on a strategy that its rivals have used in the recent past. CNN may not really know who to assign to the empty position until it knows who else will take to the playing field.
