Biden pledged to appoint a “public school teacher” back in the days when all the cool Democratic kids were making the promise. First, “public school teacher” should mean just that—not a teacher from a charter or private school. The education secretary needs to be someone who’s familiar with the most common model for the US education system, and that means public—true public—schools. He instead pushed for a special commission that created the Nation At Risk report that has fueled attacks on the public education system ever since.
