Whitman soldier buried in Tunisia gets memorial sign in front of childhood home

A World War II soldier, who enlisted in the Army at age 39 after the attacks on Pearl Harbor, is being honored by his home town of Whitman. The master of ceremonies was Thomas McCarthy, Whitman's town veterans agent, who worked with Lonergan's family and the Whitman Historical Society on the memorial tribute. Lonergan was the first known U.S. Army soldier from Whitman to die in World War II, his family said. Reading history, World War II was the first war where they made a concerted effort to bring bodies back. Lonergan's brothers Edward and Francis also served in the U.S. military during World War II.
