There's no doubt that whitebait species are threatened. If something is not done, be it environmentally or through regulation change and enforcement, generations of Kiwis will lament the loss of a wonderful way of life and cherished pastime. As recreational whitebaiters, we love this way of life, sitting by the river watching Mother Nature pass us by with all the beauty and wonder that she provides. Recreational whitebaiters are not to blame here, nor should we be made to pay the cultural and personal cost that these proposed changes would bring to our (much loved) way of life. Adequately fund and resource DOC to enable more aggressive enforcement of the existing whitebait regulations, which are perfectly adequate.
