Which parts of the world will be able to produce the cheapest green hydrogen in the long run?

China will be the cheapest place to produce green hydrogen in the long term, followed by Chile, Morocco, Colombia and Australia, in an “optimistic” scenario, according to analysis from the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena). Sign up nowChinese producers could be delivering green hydrogen at a levelised cost (LCOH) of just over $0.65 per kg by 2050, with Chile only marginally behind. This issue also affects Morocco, which according to Irena’s most optimistic cost scenario, has the potential to produce hydrogen at levelised costs comparable to Chinese production. But Egypt, which is currently the largest hydrogen consumer in Africa, could produce green hydrogen at below $1/kg when considered on its own. The country’s potential as a green hydrogen supplier has often been overshadowed by its more vociferous competitors – a situation President Iván Duque Márquez and energy minister Diego Mesa Puyo sought to rectify this month by addressing the inaugural GH2 Global Green Hydrogen Conference in Barcelona.
