When the owners of Portugal’s boutique Torel hotels added the word avant-garde to the name of their newest outpost, on a quiet street in Porto, they had earned the right. Rather, the Torel Avantgarde pays homage to a particular moment in history, when the term came into use. (I recently stayed in the sexy, low-lit Aurelia de Sousa room as a guest of the hotel.) It was easily my favorite room in the hotel—and one of the best in any hotel I’ve seen lately. Likewise, the hotel restaurant, Digby, was inspired by a visionary of his time.
