Ten UNESCO World Heritage sites in North Africa are threatened by rising sea levels. Across North Africa, climate change is threatening heritage both ancient and modern as lives are being transformed across communities that date back centuries. With rising sea levels, the land barrier separating the ocean and the lagoon is rapidly receding. Due to climate change, the number of “fishing days” per year here has dwindled from six months to just 60 days. Efforts to codify such plans at the 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Madrid failed.
