You'd think you couldn't get much more G-rated than Disney's wondrous recent remake of The Lion King, but it was given a classification of PG, with the warning of "mild themes and violence". Apart from documentaries like Apollo 11, and Amazing Grace, only a handful of G-rated films have been released this year, including Abominable, Toy Story 4 and the live-action Mary Poppins Returns. "Hollywood studios aim for certain ratings to maximise the commercial potential of their movies," explains Maddox. "The Toy Story movies have been G-rated but there's no downside for Pixar making the likes of The Incredibles, Inside Out and Finding Dory PG. Despite the decline of the G-rating, parents aren't powerless, says Maddox, who recommends using online child-focused review sites.
