Box office analysts have been breathlessly reporting that Star Wars: The Last Jedi has crossed $300 million in domestic box office receipts, and that in the days after Christmas it will top $400 million. If you have the strength of Superman, you’re supposed to be able to move mountains and planets and things; nobody gets excited just because you moved that heavy sofa that your Uncle Wally couldn’t budge. And likewise, if you have the imprimatur of the Star Wars name in your movie’s title, you’re not supposed to be doing Marvel or Fast & Furious scale business. You’re supposed to be doing Star Wars level grosses. The Last Jedi’s daily holds haven’t even been at the level of the Star Wars franchise’s previous weakest performers like Attack of the Clones or Rogue One.
