Maricopa County, which encompasses Phoenix, added the most developed land since 2001: more than 270 square miles. These changes led to a 21 percent increase in developed land since 2001. In McKenzie County, N.D., just south of Williston, N.D., there was a 66 percent increase in developed land between 2001 and 2019.
