The miniature air pockets found in the whiter ice near the top of the glacier have long since been compressed, producing the mesmerising beauty of centuries-old turquoise ice. I continue to focus on the delicately shifting shades of blue in the ice as I draw closer to the surface. Glaciers are vanishing before our eyes, having shrunk to the lowest levels ever recorded, and are now melting faster than ever. The Matanuska Glacier’s ancient ice is already rapidly vanishing. Scientists, along with others, are learning that the Arctic permafrost is less permanent than its name implies.
