One of the best and most encouraging social trends of the past few years is women using social media to dig into feminist versions of self-help, self-worth, and self-care. “No” is a complete sentence. Stigmas being severed, and vulnerability and self-discovery and connection being prioritized, is only good; the fullest, realest expression of our humanity is, just, good. It says a lot about how badly we needed to bring self-care and self-worth into the mix, that a hallmark of doing work on yourself is being pretty openly rude. It’s not social-media specific, but spiritual bypassing thrives there: those extra-long Instagram captions are not only about the processing being done, but are the processing, happening in real time.
