Earlier this month, McCarthy travelled to England as part of a concerted effort to convince diaspora players, including Vyner, to commit to the Harambee Stars. Vyner’s first call-up came under then-coach Engin Firat in May 2024. The late Firat had expressed frustration with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) over the administrative delays, noting that tactical preparations had been completed with Vyner. McCarthy has, however, confirmed that he has since re-engaged Vyner, and the player remains optimistic about representing Kenya despite his previous experience. “We had conversations, and obviously, I think for a player like Zak, his last experience was not the best when he came here,” McCarthy told reporters.
