Volcanologist Thomas Jagger, the founder of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, proposed an unusual plan to stop the lava: Bomb the Volcano. On December 27, the U.S. Army Air Corps, stationed in Oahu, send ten bombers to Mauna Loa. The rest missed, landing hundreds of feet from the target and one bomb didn't even explode. The craters created by the explosions were quickly filled by molten rock and the lava flow continued to advance. This time the vents feeding a lava flow were targeted, but again the hits were few and also some bombs didn't explode.
