When you hear the cranky version, it’s best to simply say, “Yes, yes it is,” and quickly change the subject. Some people are genuinely interested in the story behind your good news. They emphasize the you in that statement, as if you don’t deserve, didn’t earn, or somehow cheated your way to success. If there was an element of chance in your story, this is a benign thing to say. Nod, smile, and say, "I am very lucky," and understand that there's probably entire chapter about you in that person's burn book.
