A new study from researchers at University of Massachusetts, Amherst suggests what might be the best way to remove pesticides from apples: soaking the fruit in a baking soda solution. But the intention is to wash off dirt and eliminate any contaminants; not to remove pesticides. After two minutes, the baking soda solution had removed the most pesticides, with plain water working more effectively than the bleach solution. It took a 12- to 15-minute bath in the baking soda solution to remove the pesticide residue entirely. “One thing that surprised us was how long it took to wash the pesticides away,” He reportedly said.
