The strange situation surrounding third-year Golden State Warriors guard Patrick McCaw’s restricted free agency took another turn tonight as the deadline for signing his $1.7m qualifying offer passed. McCaw understandably appears to want to avoid a situation where he becomes a restricted free agent again next year, so the qualifying offer is not particularly appealing. The problem with this theory is that he is still a restricted free agent so the Warriors can match whatever he gets on the open market. As a restricted free agent, McCaw has no real leverage. So in that sense that deadline hasn’t changed the picture for either McCaw or the Warriors, who remain at an impasse.
