PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.—Gary Woodland took a two-stroke lead into the weekend at the U.S. Open, and he did it with an exclamation point: a 50-foot birdie putt to end his second round Friday at Pebble Beach. But the tournament is still wide open. At 9 under par, Woodland is two shots ahead of Justin Rose and three ahead of Louis Oosthuizen. Two of the game’s best players, Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka, are within five shots of the lead. A pack of players lurking at 3 under par includes five past major champions.
