As the Weinstein episode reveals, sexual harassment cases tend to be under-reported. Thus, part of the increase in the proportion of sexual harassment cases may simply reflect a “reporting effect” owing to a greater awareness of redressal mechanisms. The largest chunk of sexual harassment cases arise in services such as information technology (IT), and banking. Adequate monitoring and redressal of sexual harassment in companies can play an important role in creating an enabling environment for women. This also means that the number of reported harassment cases may go up rather than down in the coming years.
