A virus that infects shrimp and other seafood can now cause a new emerging eye disease in humans, a disease that can lead to permanent blindness, the latest research has found. Scientists in China have linked the Covert Mortality Noda Virus (CMNV) to a specific disease called persistent ocular hypertension viral anterior uveitis (POH-VAU). They found evidence of the virus in eye tissue from people with the disease, and several of them also confirmed recent contact with raw seafood or aquatic animals. If this link is fully proven, CMNV would be the first virus to be transmitted from aquatic life to humans and cause eye disease, and according to experts, it could become a serious health problem in the future. Scientists in the study said that the research shows that a virus found in aquatic animals is linked to an emerging disease in humans.
