There is a dimension to Tesla that I have not seen covered much, which looks at Tesla’s prospects from an innovation perspective. Every major component in the device was from a supplier that Nokia knew well, and Nokia did business with nearly all of them. Another dimension of potential value for Tesla is the value from accumulating the data on the usage of its vehicles. If and when large quantities of valid user experience data help create new value for auto makers, Tesla will be in a strong leading position. Barring a serious stumble by Tesla, it is hard to see how Toyota et al can catch up.
