What It's Like to Be a Female Mountain Guide in Morocco

Christoph Raylat/Courtesy Tawada TrekkingSince becoming Morocco’s first certified female mountain guide in 1994, Hafida Hdoubane has trekked Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, too many times to count. Moroccans didn’t really know what it meant to be a mountain guide back then. I think it’s better if women talk to women , because we speak the same language. Hdoubane currently runs Intrepid Travel’s eight-day ‘Women Expedition’ tour in Morocco , which takes female travelers through the M’Goun Valley, visits Berber families in remote areas, and spends time at a women’s artisan co-op in Talsanant. She also guides Wild Women Expeditions’ 15-day 'Mosaic of the Wild Morocco' tour , which crosses the Sahara and the Ziz Valley.
