As a convicted murderer, Mr. Kokoraleis’s photo and address are listed on the Illinois sex offender registry website. Mr. Kokoraleis, who completed his sentence and is not on parole, declined an interview request made through Mr. Lukose. Mr. Lukose said he sympathized with the mayor’s concerns, but he felt strongly that offering Mr. Kokoraleis shelter was the right thing to do. And he suggested that having Mr. Kokoraleis in a relatively structured environment at Wayside’s facility was far preferable to the prospect of him wandering the streets unsupervised. Mr. Lukose added: “I never thought that by doing right we would be suffering this.”
