Network deployment engineers have dedicated years in trying to herd these “elephant flows” with more antennas, power/cabling, concrete bunkers for new cell sites and new Gs of speed. Elephant flows are data sessions that take up significant amounts of network capacity relative to other types of data sessions. Elephant flows slow down networks by consuming available network capacity. Some cell sites are plagued with a dozen or more simultaneous elephant flows, making it difficult to keep up with and manage capacity issues.
