What’s up with the reservoirs behind the Masonic Memorial?

The older of the pair is the one closer to Duke Street. In 1929, Alexandria Water was acquired by American Waterworks and Electric, the precursor to today’s owner, Virginia American Water. The cover of the 14 million-gallon reservoir — Duke Street #1 — was removed after it was taken out of service.
