Saviano claimed that the right-wing League (Lega Nord), the half of Italy’s ruling coalition led by Salvini, was supported by organised crime as it sought to increase its political presence in southern Italy. As well as suing for defamation, Salvini has threatened to lift Saviano’s police escort, which has been in place since the Camorra mafia issued death threats against the author after the publication of his book Gomorrah in 2006.…
