The popularity and eminence of the original BBC series, which ran between 1978 and 1990, is probably a factor. But this lovely return, complete with a reprise of the fantastic theme tune in the closing credits, is worth a visit for fans of cosy TV. Stepping into the plummy Englishman Christopher Timothy’s muddy brogues as Herriot is Nicholas Ralph, who arrives in the Dales from Glasgow with a strong Scottish accent that baffles the locals and a cheese
