Ashton Sanders (“Moonlight”) stars as Bigger, a rebellious bike messenger in the South Side of Chicago with big ambitions. His hopes for a better life collapse, though, when a night alone with Henry’s spoiled daughter (Margaret Qualley) ends in tragedy. James Baldwin was famously hostile toward Wright’s novel; he argued that Bigger’s character perpetuated the stereotype that black men are predisposed to violence.
