On the afternoon of Monday December 9, Whakaari/White Island erupted while people were visiting the live volcano. A teenager who was critically injured in the Whakaari/White Island eruption has described what went through his mind in the hours following the tragedy. On December 9, Whakatane's Jake Milbank should have been celebrating his 19th birthday. Supplied White Island Tours guide Jake Milbank, 19, received burns to 80 per cent of his body during the eruption on December 9. While many in Milbank's position would fear going back the Whakaari/White Island, he hasn't ruled it out.
