At the heart of the case was a division between Nicholls’ grandchildren over the unlawful occupation of the camping ground. A number of Nicholls' descendants took their case to the Māori Land Court seeking to trespass George Nicholls, but that was rejected. In 2011 the land was vested in a common land trust – the WT Nicholls Trust, named after their grandfather. Iain McGregor/Stuff Oamaru Bay, north of the Coromandel township. In addition, for the period after the constitution of the trust, Nicholls was ordered pay to the trustees $391,824.
