Westford volunteer for homeless helpers: 'Weird things happen to your heart'

By Todd Featherstfeathers@lowellsun.comLOWELL -- Tom Skahen's first entry into the work of Living Waters was to collect backpacks. It started with collecting backpacks, then became daily shifts serving coffee at the Living Waters center on Kirk Street. Volunteer Tom Skahen of Westford talks about the Living Waters program with Executive Director Diane Waddell of Chelmsford at the nonprofit's downtown Lowell office. Living Waters began in 1998 out of the trunk of Diane Waddell's car, from which she distributed socks, belts, and other essentials. Rick finally found an apartment, and he's been living there with Living Waters' help for 17 months.
