Wellington musician Thomas Oliver has announced he is stepping away from the music industry after he admitted assaulting a woman following the 2017 New Zealand Music Awards. I will be stepping away from the music industry for the foreseeable future. “Change has started in the music industry and it's important we listen to women's voices and take a strong stance,” he said. The victim had previously been reluctant to speak out publicly about the assault because she also works in the music industry. The man took exception to Oliver highlighting in his statement that he had quit drinking following the assault and that he was nearly three-years sober.
