Emily Fitzmaurice watched the Abel Smith St fire from her house across the road. A central Wellington house was broken into in the days before an inferno that left damage so bad investigators can still not get inside to establish what happened. Police have confirmed they will need to partially demolish the Abel Smith St building before they can enter and confirm whether there are bodies inside. Detective Sergeant Hamish Blackburn confirmed police were leading the investigation into the fire at the famous Abel Smith St heritage-listed building. A cordon remained, blocking the bottom of Abel Smith St, on Wednesday morning.
